Have You Any Idea?

It is possible to use vague concepts, but better not to. This could be the motto of the initiative launched this year by the journal Liget, now already past its first “semester”. In Spring 2007 renowned artists and scholars attempted to define such concepts as sense of proportion, soul, machine, environment, growth, key concept, myth. The intellectual basics are continuing in the autumn semester with an examination of seven basic concepts: name, knowledge, imagination, work, humour, power and history. And an eighth has been added especially for the Budapest Autumn Festival: contemporary art. A composer, a writer and an architect will examine the theme in talks followed by a discussion to give a clearer idea of what we mean today by contemporary and whether the word “art” still has any meaning.

Bipolar is not the name of some kind of double-layer thermo-jacket; it designates a German-Hungarian cultural co-operation now a year and a half old. The programme has supported the implementation of more than thirty contemporary arts projects. The Late Harvest in Budapest is being held a few days after the closing of the official event in Berlin marking the end of the season. Discussions among the specialists will give the public an insight into the workshop secrets of the German-Hungarian co-operation projects and at the same time the two-day event also gives a sample of the concrete output: there will be a series of concerts, readings, film screenings and audio-visual performances in Gödör. Bipolar Lounge presents the film documentation and catalogues of thirty projects. In the evening a selection of productions by the animated film studio of Kecskemét and films of the Globale Medienwerkstatt in Berlin will be shown, while a German-Hungarian, bipolar, all-star jazz group will play on the Gödör coffee-house stage.
