Wild strength is perhaps the best brief description of the latest production of the Flemish star choreographer, Wim Vandekeybus. The piece, which demands exceptional stamina, skill and concentration from the dancers, and at times even the suspension of pain, is based on a text by the Flemish writer Peter Verhelst, interpreted for the audience by Kylie Walters. The choreography composed for four male and three female dancers explores the notions conveyed by the words resistance, change, destruction and development, while experimenting with the most varied and extreme forms of physicality with Vandekeybus’s customary unrestrained virtuosity. The music was composed by Mauro Pawlowski: the guitarist of the famous Flemish rock group dEUS with his trio accompanies the production, injecting even more energy into the already very powerful performance. Additionally two Hungarian dancers Máté Mészáros and Imre Vass also participate in the company.
A joint programme with Trafó – House of Contemporary Arts.

Jonathan Burrows [UK] – Matteo Fargion [I]
Both Sitting Duet

October 12 | 20.00
TRAFÓ – House of Contemporary Arts

Creators and performers >
Jonathan Burrows | Matteo Fargion

A joint programme with Trafó – House of Contemporary Arts.

Two middle-aged men on an empty stage. One of them, Jonathan Burrows is a dancer, the other, Matteo Fargion, a composer. They begin a dialogue of short words that gradually becomes music and the music suddenly evokes dance movements. Their work, that built up with great sensitivity and executed with perfect precision, is a gentle exploration into how the relationship between music and dance is perceived. It combines a variety of movement art, music and verbal means with amazing virtuosity and in a highly entertaining way, offering imaginative answers to the question: what is dance? And the music.
“If Einstein ever pondered on dance, the dance in question would have looked something like the work of Jonathan Burrows” – wrote the The Guardian’s dance critic. Jonathan Burrows, who began his performing career in the Royal Ballet in London and had worked with Sylvie Guillem and William Forsythe, currently teaches in the PARTS school headed by Anne Theresa De Keersmaeker.
Supported by >
Kaaitheater Brussel | Dance Umbrella London | NOTT Dance Festival [UK] | Joint Adventures | Dance 4 | Arts Council England | PARTS/Rosas | Laban London | Jonathan Burrows Group

Ticket price > HUF 2000

Hokusai was once commissioned to paint a rooster. When the client came to collect the picture, Hokusai simply said: “The picture is not ready yet”. The patient client came again and again, but the answer was always the same. Finally, ten years later, when the client appeared again, Hokusai painted the rooster on the spot in a few seconds. “Why did you have to wait ten years for that?” – asked the client. In reply Hokusai opened the door of his studio to reveal hundreds of paintings of roosters. “Now I can paint it any time” – he said.
The Artus takes this anecdote as the starting point for its new production. Their performance, with movements drawn from the gestures of paintings as well as the Chinese Shen Dao stick exercises, explores basic questions. When do we think that something we have created is good and finished? What is the compulsion to constantly qualify, criticise and judge ourselves? And who is the client?
A joint production with Trafó – House of Contemporary Arts.
